Our first donor

Meet Akhila, our first blood donor. A calm, lovable, slightly goofy saluki who absolutely loves treats and any attention she can get.

What is it like to donate?

Planning ahead

1) It is similar to going for a blood test at the vets (just better).

2) From start to finish it should not take more than 45min on the first visit and less than 30 min for any subsequent visit.

3) If possible we ask that at least 8 hours have passed between their last meal and their donation. Water and treats are fine. We typically feed them immediately after the donation.

4) We ask that you commit to donating 3-4 times a year in order for us to maintain necessary blood stocks as well as help balance all the necessary tests involved in establishing healthy donors.

The donation

1) We will always offer for you to be present with your dog during his/her visit, but you do not have to wait in the clinic should you not be able to. If you wish to drop your dog off and come back, we are more than happy to accommodate and keep feeding treats.

2) After the first visit we can even arrange pick up and/or drop off.

3) We will always try to make your dog feel as comfortable as possible. This may include asking you to wait in reception as some dogs relax more when the owner is not around.

Post donation

1) We may ask you refrain from strenuous activity for the rest of the day.

3) A neck bandage will be placed and will need to remain in place for 30min.

3) Overall, being a donor should never interfere with your dog's social life. We would never ask your dog not to see his/her friends.

How often could my dog donate?

As often as every 4 weeks but we will not ask for more than 3 to 4 times a year.

Does my dog suffer during the donation process?

Not at all. It is the same as going for a blood test at the vets, just better. We use a numbing cream on the area beforehand to make sure there is no discomfort.

What do we do if we need to leave town for business, or go on vacation?

Not a problem. We completely understand. We will always schedule the next visit at a time that is suitable for you after each donation. If something comes up just let us know and we will accommodate.

Unfortunately not every dog can be a donor. There are certain criteria in place for safe donations. If you are unsure, feel free to get in touch and we will be happy to guide you.

My dog did not manage to donate on the first visit, should we try again?

It is normal for some dogs to be nervous or slightly restless during their first donation and we will never force them. So, even if they were unable to complete the donation process we can always try again at a later date. The second time around a lot of dogs are more comfortable with the surroundings and what is happening. There are some things you can do to help make them feel more comfortable before we try again. If we or you do not feel that your dog will acclimatise there is no pressure whatsoever. We are here to make sure our donors are as happy as can be (including their owners).

What do I do if my dog has been under the weather but is not on medication?

This can can happen to all of us. If you are booked for an appointment we will always complete a full physical examination beforehand so do not worry. If you feel everything is ok and our vets concur, donating should be completely safe. If you are unsure feel free to give us a call. If for example your dog has diarrhoea on the day or vomited we would ask that you delay your donation appointment.

What do I do if I am unsure whether my dog can come for his appointments?

Do not worry. Give us a call and we can guide you. Your dog's safety and comfort is our main priority.

Pick up & drop off

During the first visit we require you to be present with your dog. This allows us to go through some important information with you.

For any subsequent visits however, we are happy to provide a pick up and/or drop off service for your dog to help make your donations easier. We offer this service free of charge to our donors.

If you would like to use our pick up and/or drop off service give us a call or let us know during your visit.
